What Are Porcelain Veneers?
A thin layer of custom porcelain that changes how your smile looks
Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made shells of dental ceramic that are bonded to the front surfaces of your teeth. Each one is shaped and shaded for you, so the finished result reflects light much like natural enamel. Veneers can change the color, shape, length and alignment of the teeth you show when you smile.
Patients in La Cañada Flintridge and La Crescenta usually ask about veneers when they want to fix:
Chipped or cracked front teeth
Gaps between teeth
Stains that don't respond to whitening
Worn, short or uneven edges
Teeth that look slightly crooked or mismatched in size
Who is a good candidate? You may be a good candidate if your teeth and gums are healthy, you don't have untreated decay or gum disease, and you want a longer-lasting change than bonding or whitening alone can give. If you grind or clench, we'll talk about protecting your veneers with a night guard. At your consultation we'll examine your teeth, review your goals and tell you honestly whether veneers, or a more conservative option, is the right fit for you.

The Porcelain Veneer Process, Step by Step
From smile design to final placement
1. Consultation & smile design: We talk through what you'd like to change, take photos and digital scans, and plan the shape, length and shade of your new smile. You'll see the proposed design before any treatment begins.
2. Preparation: Your teeth are gently reshaped as needed, often just a thin layer of enamel, under local anesthetic. We take precise scans and place temporary veneers so you can preview the new shape.
3. Try-in: When your custom veneers return from the dental lab, we check the fit, color and shape in your mouth and make adjustments with you before anything is bonded.
4. Final placement: Each veneer is bonded to your tooth, your bite is checked, and the edges are polished smooth. We'll see you for a follow-up to make sure everything feels right.
Veneers vs. Whitening, Bonding and Invisalign
Choosing the right option for your smile
Teeth whitening is a good first step if your teeth are healthy and well shaped and you mainly want them brighter. It won't change shape, and it doesn't lighten existing crowns or fillings. Learn more about professional teeth whitening.
Dental bonding uses tooth-colored resin to repair a small chip or close a small gap in one visit. It costs less up front, but resin stains and wears faster than porcelain.
Invisalign moves teeth into better alignment without changing their shape or color. For crowding or spacing, straightening first can mean fewer veneers, or none at all. See our Invisalign treatment page.
Porcelain veneers make sense when you want to change color, shape and alignment together, with a stain-resistant material that can last many years.
Porcelain Veneers FAQ
Common questions from La Cañada, La Crescenta and Flintridge patients
How long do porcelain veneers last?
With good care, many porcelain veneers last 10 to 15 years or longer. Habits like grinding, chewing ice or biting your nails can shorten that, so we may recommend a night guard.
Will my veneers look natural?
That's the goal of our smile design. We choose the shape, length and shade with your face, lips and skin tone in mind, and you approve the design and the try-in before your veneers are bonded.
How many visits does it take?
Most cases take two to three visits after your consultation: a preparation visit, a try-in or placement visit, and a short follow-up. The lab typically needs about two to three weeks between visits.
Does getting veneers hurt?
We numb the area for the preparation visit, so most patients feel pressure rather than pain. Some people have mild sensitivity for a few days afterward.
How do I care for porcelain veneers?
Brush twice a day, floss daily and keep your regular cleanings and exams. Avoid biting very hard objects, and wear a night guard if you grind your teeth.
Does dental insurance cover veneers?
Veneers placed for cosmetic reasons usually aren't covered by insurance. If a tooth also needs restoration because of damage, part of the treatment may be covered. We accept Delta Dental and other PPO plans and will check your benefits for you.
How much do porcelain veneers cost?
The cost depends on how many veneers you need and the details of your case. We'll walk you through your treatment plan and fees at your consultation, before you commit to anything.
Do you see patients from La Crescenta and Pasadena?
Yes. Our La Cañada office on Foothill Blvd sees patients from La Crescenta, Flintridge, Montrose, Altadena, Pasadena and the surrounding area.
