Wisdom Teeth Removal

How Do You Know You Are in Need of Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars that usually emerge in the back of the mouth in the late teens or early twenties. In some people, these teeth do not have enough space to properly emerge or develop, which can lead to pain, infection, and other problems. In these cases, wisdom teeth may need to be extracted.

There are several common morbidities associated with wisdom teeth, including:

  1. Impaction: When there is not enough space in the mouth for wisdom teeth to emerge, they may become impacted and only partially emerge, leading to pain and infection.

  2. Decay: Wisdom teeth can be difficult to clean, making them more susceptible to decay and gum disease.

  3. Cysts and tumors: Impacted wisdom teeth can cause fluid-filled cysts to develop, which can damage surrounding tissues and bones. In rare cases, tumors may also form.

  4. Crowding: When wisdom teeth emerge, they can cause crowding of the other teeth, leading to bite problems and shifting of the teeth.

  5. Pericoronitis: This is a painful condition that occurs when the gum tissue around a partially erupted wisdom tooth becomes infected.

If wisdom teeth are not causing any issues, it is not necessary to have them removed. However, it is important to continue regular dental check-ups so that wisdom teeth can be monitored and any potential problems can be addressed early on.
